Better care

The new unit is one of the most advanced in the country and is helping improve eye care for thousands of local people.

Western Sussex Eye Care | Southlands opened in June 2017 as a purpose-built facility designed to enable more ophthalmology patients to receive all tests, results and diagnoses in a single visit, with many treatments also available on the same day.

Doctors and nurses from Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust worked with patients, architects and designers to create new and more patient-centred facilities at the hospital.

“This complex project sets us apart from other trusts in the region and beyond”

The £7.5 million project complements the multi-million pound investment already made at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester, and completes a new service – Western Sussex Eye Care – being introduced by our dedicated team of eye care specialists across the Trust.

The purpose-built design of the new ophthalmology outpatients and day surgery department at Southlands means we can be more ambitious than ever in offering our patients the benefits of the latest ways of working and a more patient-centred approach to eye care.

Consultant ophthalmologist Mr Masoud Teimory, who has worked for the Trust for nearly 20 years, is delighted by the new facility.

Mr Teimory said:

“It is immensely exciting for my colleagues and I to be working in our new first-class facility, with innovative diagnostic and surgical equipment, so that our patients can receive the best eye care available in a safe, modern environment.

“There are very few brand new eye departments in the country built to such high specifications and we are very fortunate to have received £7.5 million investment for this complex project. It really sets us apart from other trusts in the region and beyond.”

The new service at Southlands sees more than 3,000 eye care patients a month, helping to safeguard the future of Southlands Hospital as a vibrant and modern outpatients and day surgery facility.

The opening of Western Sussex Eye Care | Southlands fulfilled a promise made by the Trust following a major public consultation called Service Redesign for Quality, which outlined the safest way for Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to provide high-quality care to the 500,000 people we look after every year.

Trust Chief Executive Marianne Griffiths said:

“Our multi-million pound investment in eye care at Southlands Hospital is fantastic news for patients, who are benefitting from bright, new, modern surroundings staffed by highly-skilled eye care specialists.

“Western Sussex Eye Care | Southlands is another service in which we will now excel for our patients and provide them with some of the very best quality care in the country.”
